Refrigeration Optimization Program (OPTER) – Supermarket Component

Program description

The OPTER – Supermarket Component provides support to owners of refrigeration systems in supermarkets by helping them optimize their facilities. The primary goal of the program is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from refrigeration infrastructures by promoting the use of effective technologies.

The program aims to help:

  • Reduce the amount of refrigerants used, notably by installing secondary loops
  • Promote the use of more ecological refrigerants
  • Integrate refrigeration, heating, and ventilation systems to reduce GHG emissions from fuel burning equipment in supermarkets.

This program is financed by the Green Fund of the PACC action plan (Plan d’action sur les changements climatiques 2006-2012).

Eligible infrastructure

To be eligible, existing or new buildings must be commercial enterprises that house refrigeration systems for food storage, have heated indoor areas and a closed machine room, and be located in Québec. Projects must have the potential to reduce annual GHG emissions by at least 100 tonnes of CO2 equivalents.

Technical support

The following technical support will be provided:

  • The project’s technical team will receive all the information it needs to help it design the system and learn about available alternative technologies.

  • Projects will be analyzed to advise participants on how to optimize future facilities.

  • Participants will be assisted throughout the implementation phase to help them carry out their project.

Financial assistance

Participants may receive up to $125,000, based on the project’s potential to reduce GHG emissions. Please note that the potential of the project for reducing GHG emissions is an estimate for the specific requirements of the program. This potential is determined based on the characteristics of a reference building.

How to participate in the program?

The financial assistance application process begins in the final stages of project design, before the equipment is ordered.
